Gettin' Going

Embark on a journey through the rich history and scenic beauty of the Reno-Tahoe region by exploring the Huffaker Hills Trail. Named after the influential settler Granville W. Huffaker from 1858, this trail promises an adventure that intertwines nature and heritage.

To begin your expedition, simply input "Huffaker Hills Trail" into your Google Maps, and it will guide you to the trailhead located at Alexander Lake Rd, Reno, NV 89521. As you arrive, you'll find a well-marked trailhead with a paved parking lot accommodating around 15 cars. Keep in mind, though, that nature calls louder than ever here—there's no restroom on site, so plan accordingly!

The trail unfolds with an intriguing mix of challenges and scenic rewards. The path, covered with potato-sized rocks, offers a terrain that adds an element of excitement but requires careful navigation. While I haven't witnessed bikers racing down the hills personally, traces of their presence hint at the trail's versatility.

Bringing along my adventurous six-month-old cattle dog, we seamlessly navigated the landscape, enjoying every twist and turn. From the trailhead, follow the obvious path, and you'll encounter a convenient table—an ideal spot for a snack break amidst breathtaking views. When the trail splits, opt for the left route, and after approximately 100 yards, take a right at the subsequent Y junction.

As you meander through less visible but discernible paths, informative stations emerge, sharing tales of the Washoe Indians and the diverse wildlife inhabiting the area. The historical snippets transport you back in time, painting vivid pictures of the valley's landscapes from days gone by.

The trail culminates in a gradual elevation gain, leading to a vantage point with awe-inspiring views. Catch your breath on the bench, gazing towards Mount Rose, before continuing your adventure. You're halfway! Instead of retracing your steps, head straight past the next hill, where a dirt road unfolds before you.

A half-mile down the flat dirt road, a barbed wire fence guides you to a captivating sight—a substantial water tank. Take a slight right, traverse small switchbacks, and find yourself retracing the initial split in the trail. Congratulations, you've conquered the Huffaker Hills Trail! Celebrate your achievement with a refreshing beer or cold lemonade while soaking in the unparalleled views you've just experienced.
