Nevada's Ancient Petroglyphs: A Journey Through History

Updated: Apr 8

Nevada has an insane amount of history if you stop to look. Today my 9 month old puppy and I took advantage of the warm weather and decided to get out of town. We headed to a place where people normally don't have on their bucket-list: Fallon, Nevada. There are some very unique recreational things to do in the area including caves, ancient lakes, sand dunes, and petroglyphs.

After about an hour and a half we got to Grimes Point Archeological Site. There is a small parking lot with picnic tables under shade. The bathrooms had zero toilet paper so its a bring your own kinda situation. The trail to see the petroglyphs is about 1/4 mile from start to finish but there is a 2 mile loop to an outlook.

Right away on the trail you can start to see them, they aren't that hard to find. To stand there and think back on what this land and humans were like 12,000 years ago; the Ice Ages stages. Around that time the land we stand on would be at the bottom of a sea! The settlers at the time were the Paiute Trail who hunted antelope and deer. As you keep walking along the trail there are information signs that tell you what life was like.

If you get to the end of the trail rather quickly, I recommend turning around and going back the same way so catch of some petroglyphs you might have missed. Hidden cave is down the road 1.4 miles but this trip we didn't do it because it was getting hot for Blue. That will be on the list for next time!

Have you ever seen a petroglyphs? Let me know below!

I have been so Sand Mountain before! It's worth a stop if you have time! It's 15 minutes East of Grimes. In case you were about to Google it, here is a little sneak peak ;)
