More than hiking...

Updated: Aug 7, 2023

Being in one of the most beautiful areas, Reno / Tahoe, people think of skiing, snowboarding, and being by the water right away but there is one activity that flies under the radar: disc golfing. There are many reasons to love disc golfing including the fact that the discs are insanely cheap, after that it's free, you're outside and anyone can honestly play.

The discs are similar to golf: distance drivers, fairway drivers, mid-range discs, and putters. When I buy a disc, I find the coolest looking one, no joke. I like to play disc golf but by no means am I a professional. You can find discs at your local sport shop for about $20 bucks. It's fun when you have a couple discs to share with friends, get outside and get some random exercise. Before hole one there is usually a map that you can follow, try and find it because it's so helpful when you can't find the next hole. If you're in the Reno and/or Tahoe area, then there are a couple that you should check out.

Lizard Peak - Reno

Absolutely my favorite course in Reno! This course has beautiful views of the whole city, glorious mountain views 360 degrees and you can catch the best rays! There are 27 holes to golf and also a mini course. The mini course is fun when you want to practice, get familiar with the disc or even going with someone who is new to the sport. If you want a challenge, then the back 9 holes are the toughest.

The Ranch at Rancho San Rafael - Reno

The Ranch is fun because there is so many open spaces and it's harder to lose your disc there. This course also has an amazing view of the city. Dogs are always welcome, so are bikers and hikers along the trails within the course. There is a hole at Rancho that has an advertisement for a BOGO burger at Archies when you mention the ad (this was at least in 2019). One of the best parts of the course is that across the highway is the largest dog park in Reno.

Tahoe Vista Disc Golf Course - North Lake Tahoe

If you are up for a challenge than this course is for you! There are a lot of trees making it fun to work on your throwing skills. The first hole is up a mountain so make sure everyone in your party is physically fit for this course, it's not hard but can be tiring. Depending on the time of year you can see bear within the woods doing their thing. This course isn't too far from town so you can grab a quick bite then head out for a good game of disc golf.

North Tahoe Lions Club Disc Golf Course - North Lake Tahoe

Continuing on the north shore of Tahoe is another awesome disc golf course. The course is one you definitely need to find the map, either there or online. I like this course because there is a gorgeous stream running through the course and it really makes you feel like you're one with nature. This course isn't too long and doesn't gain elevation so it's great for everyone.

Bijou Disc Golf Course - South Lake Tahoe

Best for last. This course is absolutely my favorite course out here! The course takes you through the light wooded area with no elevation gain. I believe that the open meadow makes this one my favorite. Frollicking through this meadow with stunning views of mountains all around you. Lake Tahoe is minutes away for a good afternoon swim.
